have been looking into and reporting on some of romney's debate preps. you're right, carol. you mentioned that romney was with gop senator rob portman. i got to tell you, it is surprising that romney wants to hang out with portman still since he has been playing president obama. by all accounts in the mock debates, portman has been very, very tough on romney, to prepare him for the real thing. portman is the go-to guy for republicans for debate prep. he's worked with republican candidates since 2000 and i spoke with senator portman in an exclusive interview about what he does to prepare to prepare romney. >> how they're likely to express themselves, what the body language is going to be like, try to imitate the person, but you try to give a fair presentation, you know to whoever you're working with as to what they're likely to do. >> now, portman and romney's other members of his inner cile have been doing mock debates with him on and off for about a month. he had his first round of debate boot camp at mock debates in vermont during the democratic convention and he's had it seve

. >> that's what i like about you, faris. all right. >>> but first, the high-stakes drama tonight in denver. >> president obama and mitt romney facing off in the first of three debates. abc's karen travers is in denver with a preview. >> reporter: with president obama and mitt romney doing final debate preps, their running mates hit the campaign trail. vice president biden was speaking about romney's economic plans when he said this. >> how they can justify raising taxes on the middle class that's been buried the last four years. >> reporter: republicans call it a stunning admission that the middle class has been hurt by the obama administration's policies. congressman paul ryan pounced. >> of course, the middle class has been buried. they're being buried by regulations. they're being buried by taxes. is they're being buried by borrowing. they're being buried by the obama administrations economic failures. >> reporter: biden later tried to dig himself out. >> the middle class was buried by the policies of romney and the ryan supported. >> reporter: except for debate prep, it was a politics-
-building... right here at home. it's time for a new economic patriotism, rooted in the... belief that growing our economy begins with a strong... thriving middle class. read my plan. compare it to governor romney's,and decide for yourself. thanks for listening. i'm barack oma and i approve this message. >> you are watching abc 7 news at 5:00, on your side. >> today marks the tenures since the terrifying day when there was a shooting -- today marks 10 years since the terrifying day when there was a shooting. john allen muhammad his wife is telling a story. brad? >> yes alison, 10 years ago i stood in this spot. the second shooting took place at that gas pump. the police tried to figure out what on earth was going on with the so-called d.c. sniper. today, we had a chance to talk to mildred the ex-wife of john allen muhammad the d.c. sniper. she said that day she was terrified, like everybody else. she had no idea her husband was involved. one man was killed as he cut grass along rockville pike. later, one other was killed as he pumped-up -- pumped gas. another was killed at leisure world plaza. f
right now. there we are. that's where president obama and mitt romney will face off on stage. just one moderator, jim lehrer, of pbs. >> both candidates saying for months it will be crucial. >>> also, in this half hour, in this first half, a new showdown is heating up. a tree that almost killed, well, mcsteamy as you know him from "grey's anatomy." his wife was awe alone in the backyard. a tree fell on her from the next door neighbor's yard. a big legal battle brewing. >> and the lead singh from the smashing pumpkins. >>> first, we're going to get to the latest trouble for american airlines. a story we first brought you on "good morning america." another flight was forced to make an emergency landing last night. and abc's jim avila has been tracking all of the developments. jim, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, elizabeth. american pilots could be at the bargaining table as early as today, perhaps bringing to an end a string of delays that is crippling the reputation of the bankrupt airline which seems to be suffering one maintenance problem to another. this morning, the embattl
they blame the rich people? they have money, too. right now i'm supporting mitt romney. host: let's get a response. guest: i am sorry that you lost your job. what is says is our economy is not on track. president obama knows that and his message is, "give me four more years." the message from mitt romney is, "get out of here. you have had enough time." that will be a crucial issue. people are looking for those messages. guest: it tends to get lost. not blaming that on the financial mess. of course it will affect him and his political outlook and his vote if he has felt the sting of this recession and getting laid off. a lot of people have been out of work for a long time. some of the jobs may not be coming back. anybody from the romney camp may be looking for this caller. guest: lois romano was talking about the people that lost jobs mostly were white men. i think those are the votes that are in jeopardy. republicans have traditionally gone towards republicans anyway. he has the ability to capture your vote. host: lauren ashburn is the editor in chief of "daily download." howard kurtz i
's right, george. the speech was covered five years ago. though, not part of the remarks when then-senator obama ad-libbed. conserves are calling it explosive. the obama campaign is calling it a desperate attempt by romney's allies to change the subject. speaking to the largely african-american hampton university ministers conference in june 2007, then-senator obama went off his prepared remarks. using a different speaking style than usual, obama charged new orleans, post-hurricane katrina, was supposed to get disaster from the stafford fund. a requirement waived for other disaster victims. >> when 9/11 happened in new york city, they waived the stafford act. said this is too serious a problem. we can't expect new york city to rebuild on its own. >> reporter: same with hurricane andrew in florida, he said. but -- >> what's happening down in new orleans? there's your dollars? where's your stafford act money? makes no sense. tells me the bullet hasn't been taken out. tells me that somehow, the people down in new orleans, they don't care about as much. >> reporter: beyond the accuracy
the president. he's the devil they know. romney is the devil they don't. they haven't made up their mind about him one way or the other right now. >> colorado has nine electoral votes up for grabs, making it a crucial state for both candidates. there will be two more debates this month of the the second one takes place on october 16th. >>> tells me that somehow the people down in new orleans, they don't care about as much. >> conservatives are using this 2007 video of then presidential candidate barack obama against him before tonight's debate. they say the video shows a racially charged speech by obama, who told a group of black clergy that the bush administration was incompetent in its reaction to hurricane katrina. >>> tony, what should we expect tonight? for insight we turn to bret baier live in colorado this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. >> curious, what might these two gentlemen be doing now? do you think they have gotten any sleep today? >> reporter: well, i think the campaigns are hoping they got some sleep, because i think this moment is a big moment for bot
the president and mr. romney have scheduled rehearsal times. the hall itself has been closed to cameras all day, no media is permitted in the rehearsals. right now, this is the spin room, where hundreds of the press are setting up their own studios. we also learn from the white house that the president would get the first question tonight, two minutes to respond, and in terms of who is invited to night, students from the university of denver, a member of guests invited by the campaign will be invited and independent. -- in attendance. once again, it all starts with our preview program at 7:00, the debate beginning at 9:00, focusing on domestic policy. earlier this week, journalists and political communications scholars discuss the upcoming presidential debates and ask the citizens to judge candidates on their grasp of issues and the qualities they want in a leader. this was held by the national communications association, took place here at the newseum in washington. this is about one hour and a half. >> it is my distinct pleasure to welcome you here today in our knight studio at the newseum fo
